The 2nd International Meeting of Amur-Okhotsk Consortium will be held on November 5 and 6, 2011, in Sapporo, Japan, as a program in Hokkaido University Sustainable Weeks 2011.

The Sea of Okhotsk is known as one of the bountiful oceans in the world with the highest productivity and biodiversity. However, the Sea of Okhotsk has some risk to be affected by the climate change and the rapid development in the Amur River Basin. In order to prevent this problem, a multilateral researchers’ network called “The Amur-Okhotsk Consortium” has been established in November, 2009, not only with Japan and Russia which share the Sea of Okhotsk but also with China and Mongolia which can affect the Sea of Okhotsk through the Amur River. This is the 2nd international meeting of this consortium. The objective of this meeting is to discuss how to preserve the shared heritage of cross-border environment, and how to pass it on to the next generation by academic perspectives with the participation of general public and students. We are looking forward many of your participation!!

In the 1st International Meeting of Amur-Okhotsk Consortium in 2009, it was decided that Japan would be a provisional secretariat. In order to hold the 2nd meeting in 2011 and continue to promote research activities and the multilateral networking, the Japanese secretariat of Amur-Okhotsk Consortium has applied for the financial support by Mitsui & Co., Ltd. Environment Fund, and it was adopted in April, 2011.

Mitsui & Co., Ltd. Environment Fund is founded in 2005 as the grant program operated by Mitsui with the aim of supporting activities and research to contribute to solving global environmental problems by providing funding to NPOs and to universities and other institutions.

The activities of Amur-Okhotsk Consortium will be financially supported for 3 years starting from 2011 by this grant. In this year, the first year of this funding, we will hold the 2nd International Meeting of Amur-Okhotsk Consortium in November 5-6, 2011, in Sapporo, Japan. Mitsui & Co., Ltd. Environment Fund will enable us to invite co-investigators from overseas. In 2012, the second year of the grant, we plan to have an environmental monitoring program in the Amur River with researchers from Russia, China, Mongolia, and Japan. And in 2013, the final year of the grant, the 3rd International Meeting of Amur-Okhotsk Consortium will be held in Sapporo, again. This will be the final stage run by Japanese secretariat, and will be successfully turned over to the next secretariat.
