Address by AOC Japanese representative:

We would like to welcome you to the Amur River from September 25 to 30, 2012. This will be an outstanding occasion to discuss the importance of the Amur River and its environment by scientists from riparian countries and Japan.

As you already know, Amur-Okhotsk Consortium was established in 2009 during the International Symposium on “Environmental Conservation of the Sea of Okhotsk: cooperation between Japan, China and Russia”. The consortium is a multilateral researchers’ network to promote the sharing of information on environments, to make efforts toward a cooperative environmental monitoring and to facilitate the robust discussions that transcends borders toward an environmental conservation and sustainable use of the resources of the Amur River Basin and the Sea of Okhotsk.

Following to the International Workshop for the 2nd Amur-Okhotsk Consortium in November 1-2, 2010, during which a Mongolian scientist was welcomed to the consortium, the 2nd International Meeting of Amur-Okhotsk Consortium 2011 –towards the sharing of environmental data in the Pan Okhotsk region- held in November 5-6, 2011, proposed to hold a joint research cruise in the Amur River by inviting scientists from the riparian countries including Japan to exchange the current knowledge on the Amur River and the surrounding environments separately collected by each country.

Amur-Okhotsk Consortium started to discuss the possibility of the cruise with the Institute of Water and Ecological Problems of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IWEP/FEBRAS), and it became possible with the financial support from Mitsui & Co., Ltd. Environmental Fund and the Institute of Low Temperature Science, Hokkaido University. We would like to thank Mitsui & Co., Ltd., the Institute of Low Temperature Science (Hokkaido University), and the Institute of Water and Ecological Problems (FEBRAS) for their long-lasting supports given to Amur-Okhotsk Consortium. I do hope this cruise will be an important milestone for the future of the Amur-Okhotsk ecosystem.
